March 2023 Motorcycle Run

Held on 5 March 2023

With the main motorcycle run organisers away it was left to me to lead the run on the 5th of March.

I don’t know if the forecast of 35 degrees or the black clouds kept riders away, but 7 bike riders and one pillion passenger turned up, 6 members and 2 visitors.

We left Berri for a ride around Winkie and the back of Glossop finally coming into Monash from the back way. A few spots of rain around Glossop were just enough to cool us off.

Parking at the Monash playground we lamented the demise of the original playground and the antics we would get up to there at all hours of the day and night. None of us were compelled to relive the past and go in, so we went across the road to the Monash Club. There we spent some time relaxing and talking before heading home.

Merv had decided the ride from Barmera to Berri and back was enough to try his bike out as he had not been out on it for a while. Merv rides a 1999 125cc Cagivar and although I ride an ag bike every day there is no way I’m flexible enough to contort myself to fit on the boy racer Cagivar. I know Merv’s age has been mentioned before (90++) and he’s an inspiration to some of us to get our bikes out and enjoy riding.

I guess, like the car runs, the bikes are getting newer and don’t always fit the vintage or classic mould but it’s never not interesting. Bruce always has something “different”. This time a Harley Davidson Tricycle or as he called it his three-wheel gopher complete with his shopping box on the back.

I didn’t like to tell Bruce but with the innuendos of Harley’s reliability it looked very much like an oversize toolbox.

Having to record the use of your vehicles in a log book can be a wake-up call.

The Honda CBA750 we took on the run had not been on the road since the February RVCCC run in 2022. The bike ran fine but Rosalie found her dodgy hip doesn’t help getting on and off. Perhaps it’s time to look for a sidecar. If anyone has experience with sidecars, I would like some advice on what to look for.
